This room invites you to discover the Talvas dynasty which shaped our region in the Middle Ages. They were relatives of William the Conqueror from the Montgomery family. The most illustrious character of this lineage is certainly Robert II of Bellême known as the devil. He built fortresses and fortifications throughout the Saos region over more than 16 km and restored the castle of Mamers. When William the Conqueror died, he was the main instigator of a rebellion aimed at recovering his inheritance. He inherited the name “Talvas”, which means “looter”, and was defeated by the Conqueror’s successor, the King of England. He ended his life in prison, dying shortly after 1130.

His successor William III Talvas, showed great piety. He participated in the crusade of the collapsed King of France Louis XII at the Cistercian Abbey of Perseigne a few kilometers from Mamers, the ruins of which are listed as Historic Monuments.

The fortifications and the castle of Mamers were destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War by the Count of Salisbury, who, like the Saosnois, paid a heavy price. The battle of Saint Remy du Plain (Saint Remy du Val a few kilometers from Mamers) appears as an important battle between Armagnacs and Burgundians and clearly illustrates the difficulty of this period for the region.

In order to make you relive this tumultuous era, the room is decorated according to the customs of the time. Henry II-style furniture is highlighted with a reconstruction of one of the best-known medieval tapestries. This is “the lady with the unicorn,” which can be found at the National Museum of the Middle Ages at the Hôtel de Cluny in Paris. An engraving representing the type of fortification built at the time and the possible devil’s sword will not fail to seduce you!
