The room invites you to discover the most famous couple in Mamers: Monsieur and Madame Caillaux. Joseph Caillaux is known as the instigator of the income tax. He was Minister of Finance in several successive governments from 1899 to 1926 under the Third Republic, including Minister of the Interior and President of the Council of Ministers. An informed humanist, he spoke out in favor of Dreyfus and peace with Germany before and during the First World War. Great enemy of Clémenceau, he almost became President of the Republic at one time if the latter had not been known for another affair committed by his wife.

In 1914, Gaston Calmette, director of Le Figaro, launched a violent press campaign against the policies of Joseph Caillaux. He notably published the epistolary exchanges between Joseph Caillaux and his wife Henriette when they were only lovers. Exasperated by these repeated attacks, Henriette Caillaux went to Gaston Calmette’s office on March 16, 1914, and murdered him with four bullets.

His wife got arrested while Joseph Caillaux resigned the next day and participated in the defense of Henriette, who was acquitted on July 26, 1914. This trial highlights the corruption and influence of politicians during the Third Republic. He subsequently resumed his political career until June 1940.

The room is decorated according to the tastes of the time with Napoleon III furniture and more contemporary furniture. Many illustrated press front pages of the time cover the thrilling Caillaux affair as well as the great tragedy of the Mamers flood of June 7, 1904, which caused 17 victims and provoked a great witness throughout France.
